THE CHERRY THIEF
In The Cherry Thief, Sophie Crockett returns to her Garden of Eden series with characteristic narrative. The scene is sunrise in a woodland clearing on the forest's edge — a dawning Eden that feels less like paradise than like the moment of leaving it. The figures who wake here have the stillness of the Fates; unhurried, yet already on the threshold of something irreversible.
A stag, separated from its herd, stands as an unlikely guardian with an almost ceremonial calm. A white billygoat is less composed. Strayed from its family, its attention fixed on the same cherries, it carries the painting's subtle charge — desire not yet acted upon, but unmistakably present. The dawning temptation, when it comes, will surprise no one.
