I’ve long been interested in modularity—breaking images into parts or building them from repeated components. In the Millefiori series, this took the form of concentric, pebble-like structures inspired by arrangements like those at Kettle’s Yard, where found and made objects hold equal value.
Phase Two explores a different approach: cutting a single form into pieces, then treating each separately. This creates unexpected interactions and details that emerge from the process rather than deliberate placement. I’m drawn to how flaws and “glitches” bring energy to the work.
There’s a tension between structure and randomness. True randomness is hard to achieve, but introducing chance within a framework can enhance a composition’s vitality.
I’m continuing these modular studies, partly driven by an attraction to their intensity and labour. There’s a persistent belief that effort validates outcome, even as technology especially AI challenges that idea. For now, I’m committed to the process, curious whether art will shift back toward the handmade in response.
