Binary Opposites - Kieran Stubbs

London College of Communication

Binary Opposites is a typographic project that explores the interplay of contrast, process, and craft. Developed in response to a brief examining opposing forces, the work reflects on how dualities, analogue and digital, legible and abstract, structured and experimental, can coexist within design. Each poster was created through a process-driven approach: I designed a typographic system of custom letterforms, which were laser-cut into 3mm wood type, then combined with metal type to complete the compositions. The letterpress process introduced an element of tactility and unpredictability, where the physical impression of ink and wood grain became integral to the visual identity. The resulting A2 typographic prints highlight the tension between mechanical reproduction and individual craftsmanship, embracing imperfection as part of the design language. Through Binary Opposites, I sought to demonstrate how typography can extend beyond communication into a material exploration of process, surface, contrast, and the incalculable possibilities of print production.
